We ascended Diagonal, followed the Twelve Apostles Spine Track south-west, taking in Tranquillity Cracks, summited Grootkop (857 m ASL) as the wind cloud momentarily cleared. We were then blown down Oudekraal Ravine and returned along the Pipe Track. The full circuit was about 14 km in length with roughly 1000 m elevation gain. All of us are fairly conditioned hikers and some are very hiking fit, but we were all bone-weary afterwards (perhaps I should hasten to add that three of us are pushing 70 …). It is a similar circuit to a previous hike, except for Grootkop summit. On that occasion the peak was completely clouded in.

Bob was carrying weight to train for his next Rim of Africa traverse, accompanied by Anè, another Rim hiker, while Santie treated it as a vacation from guiding mountain hikes. Andre and I, both from Rooiels, were tagging along for the adventure.
